- How do I find my Sweet Spot?
-
Who is ready to get a little bit better. You should get yourself into peak state before you read this. You should shout or make your move. Master your state. Let’s talk about something that is extremely relevant; it is relevant as I have had a few coaching calls on this today, alone.
One was with an accountability partner. We do weekly calls and there are themes coming from a particular tension in our lives that if you are a business leader you understand. If you are a high impact leader, you know when you are building the business and somehow overtime, the drift happens, overwhelm takes over… or we get into a place where we don’t even like what we are doing. We get caught up in the humdrum, the monotony… and we don’t love it.
Some of the things we might actually hate. Like, why am I looking at a spreadsheet? Well, because at times there is no way around it and you are going to have to do it. You’re going to have to develop some skills that don’t necessarily lean toward your aptitudes or strengths. BUT I want to talk to you about this question because if you are in one of those seasons where you’re feeling like you have lost some of your mojo… how do you find your sweet spot?
How do I get into that sweet spot?
Sometimes, you might think, I want that back BUT I don’t even remember what it is… like what is my sweet spot? Some of you have never lived in your sweet spot for a prolonged amount of time. I want to share my experience from the last six days. I was on three different stages serving three different audiences. One was a two day event and it was SO FUN. Talk about sweet spot, flow, passion, and calling. It was like fireworks were going off the entire time. It was so much FUN. It led to some conversations with another friend of mine… when you start to ask the right questions, it gets a whole lot easier to get into that sweet spot.
That is what you want to do. You want to get in your sweet spot. Here are three questions to get you there. But before I get into that, sometimes your sweet spot might be on the calling side. And when I think of the questions to ask when trying to find your sweet spot I don’t think so much: What do I hate? What do I love? Or stuff like that… I am going to give you the questions that are really going to lead you to your sweet spot. And when I say sweet spot, I mean SWEET SPOT… like what is the sweetness in life? It is all the good things.
Now, if you are a business leader, an entrepreneur, a stay at home domestic CEO… I don’t care what you are, if you want to find your sweet spot; ask yourself what is fun to me? What do I love doing? What do I do that just lights me up? What is the thing that brings me joy, fulfillment, and energy?
Yesterday, I was in a room with about 150 people and it was electric. The audience was engaged, people were asking questions, I was connecting with individuals and I was having fun. I have said the word fun probably over 52 times in the last three hours because I had so much fun.
What is fun to YOU?
Do you love engaging with clients? Do you love working with the younger people on your team and teaching them the ropes, mentoring, coaching them? Do you love getting into the numbers, the analytics, the data? If that’s you… you do you. That would be like the worst to me. That is not my sweet spot.
Really think about it: What is fun to me? Have you been doing the stuff that is fun to you? Find some of that stuff and do it today! Do something that makes you smile. I feel it when I get on a stage. It is hard for me not to grin ear to ear because I’m doing what I was called to do. What was I made to do?
What is easy to you? Because there are certain things that are easy to you, that may not be easy to me. Like, I have been speaking on stages for more than 25 years… it is effortless and easy. And if it is not, then I’m not doing something right. I’ve had lots of practice and a lot of opportunities. I love to connect with people and deliver content that brings transformation to people’s lives.
When I got on the stage the other day, I didn’t even have notes. It wasn’t that I didn’t prepare, I was prepared. It was 25 years of preparation rather than putting some notes in a document. I literally said, to be honest the slide deck is for you, that’s not for me. I wasn’t taking cues from my slides. But they were taking notes and it was so much fun to serve them. And it was effortless, it was easy.
Talking with my friend a little bit ago, she said it is easy for her to consult with business owners to get them to the next level; help them get out of the way, stop those self-sabotaging patterns, set them loose with the right goals, and give them the right framework. It is so easy for her to do that. If you need her details, message me. She can get your business on track and set you free!!
Think about what is effortless to you. What’s easy? Think about the times someone has said, HOW DO YOU DO THAT? How did you get the answers? How did you do that so quickly? How did you make that look so easy? Pay attention, because that can be a clue to your sweet spot.
This is going to be a harder question for some of you to answer. This is a dangerous question for me because I’m using this illustration. While I was on stage the other day… I’m not going to say I do it better than anyone else, BUT I do it better than a lot of people. For me, this has a lot less to do with me being the best of the best and a lot more to do with my calling, my gifting, my passion and the past 25 years are a testimony to that when I get on a stage.
I watch other people and I know I have an advantage. I have been a pastor for 25 years before starting a coaching company, before serving my clients I had been serving a whole lot of people and transforming lives way before that.
Some might even say that I have an unfair advantage because for 25 years, I have been figuring out how to get on a stage and talk to people. Whereas, many people in the coaching space may have started somewhere else without the skill sets to be on stages and they might still be finding themselves. John Maxwell, one of the greatest speakers and communicators in history, said it takes you about 10 years to find yourself to be comfortable on stage. I’ve found that to be true. I spent a decade figuring out who I am, how I show up, and how I try not to be someone else. For me, now, when I get on a stage, there is an ease. It is effortless.
Looking around, I could easily say that I actually do better than a lot of folks… But I don’t want to get caught up in the comparison because it is a thief of joy. But still, think about what you do better than anyone else? Think about the thing you do, everytime someone says that you’re better at that than anyone else. Or they might say, you’re the best I have ever seen. Maybe you connect with people in a way that other people just can’t do. Maybe you’re good at getting to the root of the problem, like one of the most amazing problem solvers. What do you do better than anyone else?
And don’t hold back, don’t get that false humility thing. We are not trying to go into arrogance or pride but I am trying to get you to own your greatness because there is something on the inside of you that the world needs. When you ask those three questions… What is fun to me? What is effortless? What do I do better than anyone else? Guess what you are going to find? Hello, SWEET SPOT!
I think about it when I step on a stage, when I coach, when I lead a mastermind. Those are the things that are in my sweet spot; my calling, my flow, my passion, my gifting. And so for you, I want you to live into the thing(s) that are your sweet spot.
There are times and seasons in our lives When we are growing, paying our dues, building our business, building a career… and we are going to have to do stuff that is not part of our sweet spot. That is part of the journey. Don’t be a victim. Grow from it. You’re going to have to mitigate some of the weaknesses and learn how to do some things.
And there are also going to be seasons where you get to a place where you can delegate some of the stuff that you are not the best at… and I have a long list of those by the way. My friends can tell you what they are… my team can definitely tell you. When you can delegate stuff and just do what you are best at… it will make you come alive! Do what adds the most value to the world.
I challenge you, if you are not in a season where you are living in your sweet spot or you are hunting for your sweet spot, ask yourself these questions: What is fun for you? What is effortless? What do you do better than anybody else? Own that greatness that is on the inside of you. Do some reflecting, maybe you get to shift now or in the future to live into that sweet spot.
My wife gave me this language, maybe six years ago, when she said I want to be doing something that makes my heart sing. Since then, she has launched her interior design business and she is thriving. Clients are coming in left and right because she is the best of the best. She is good at what she does because she is living in her sweet spot. So what makes your heart sing? There’s a clue to what your sweet spot is.
Know your sweet spot because there is something on the inside of you that this world needs. This is where you need to go out there and give your greatness to the world because somebody needs what is on the inside of you. Go out there and give it away!
